Historic Churches Preservation Trust - Keeping Churches Alive
Founded in 1953, HCPT’s mission has remained the same since its inception: to assist local communities with the conservation of their church. Working throughout England and Wales, HCPT distributes grants and loans to around 500 Christian denomination churches each year, helping to ensure that the unique and beautiful heritage of the local church remains a fundamental part of community and landscape.
Grants and interest free loans are awarded of essential fabric repairs. Amounts range from £1,000 to £75,000. Factors which are taken into account in deciding the level of a grant or a loan include the parish's demonstrable commitment to its church, the historic and architectural importance of the church and the extent of the deficit between costs and funds raised.
HCPT also manages the Incorporated Church Building Society, which gives grants and loans for Anglican church repairs and new church build projects. All applications submitted the HCPT are also considered by the ICBS and vice versa. HCPT works closely with the local County Church Trusts, with English Heritage/HLF and Cadw, helping to promote a common purpose across these organizations.
HCPT receives no state aid and relies solely on the generous support of corporate, charitable trust and individual donors.
